Background & History

             State Institute of Education was established in the old Secretariat building in 1979. It was shifted to GSSS Mohanpura building in 1995. The present SIE is functioning in the Shiksha Sadan building, Link Road, Port Blair since 1999. SIE was entrusted the task of preparing programmes and policies from Primary level to Senior Secondary level by the UT Administration.

Objectives
  • To improve the quality of education in the state by imparting in-service training to teachers, teacher educators, administrators and other educational personnel.

  • To provide academic leadership within the state and act as the hub of academic research, innovation and motivation by organizing workshops and seminars on various subjects and issues.

  •  To be a symbol of quality and to provide valuable insights by conducting studies on issues related to quality education in the state.

Roles and Functions
  • To act as an apex body on school education in pursuance of the recommendations of National policy on Education- 1986 (NPE-1986) and National Curriculum Framework-2005 (NCF-2005)

  • To be umbrella body over DIET in the UT to implement and monitor all the UT/National Level Educational Programmes.

  • To undertake training programmes, evaluations and research work in the field of school education.

  • To organize in-service programmes for teachers, teacher educators and administrators.

  • To review and develop training materials for in-service training programmes.

  • To conduct extension activity in population education, adolescent education, environment education etc.

  • To implement programmes of Pre-school Education, Inclusive Education, Work Experience, Physical Education and Vocational Education.

  • To conduct educational surveys/Achievement survey from time to time at the UT level as well as National level.

  • To conduct National Talent Search Examination (NTSE) & National Means cum Merit Scholarship Examination (NMMS) every year.

  • To offer academic guidance to DIET.

  • In-service teacher training programmes entrusted by Department of Elementary Education, New Delhi.

  • To conduct various competitions as and when assigned by the Ministry/Agency.

  • To conduct examination for the enhancement of meritorious students from rural and tribal areas.

  • To inspect/supervise and monitor the classroom performance of the teachers and extend academic support.
