Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) a flagship programme is launched by Govt of India for
achieving the target of universalization of Elementary Education in mission mode.
One of its adjectives is to look into different categories of children who are deprived
of Education because of reach. Therefore Education for all is an important aspect of SSA
for reaching out to the unreached, providing quality elementary education to all irrespective
of the gender, creed, caste, category and degree of disability. Under SSA, Govt of India is
committed to provide appropriate and meaningful education to all children in the age group of 6-14 years.

Recognizing the diversity of children’s needs and abilities a prime requirement
for providing useful and qualitative education at elementary level. Hence, programmes
that are planned to provide education at elementary level under SSA requires appropriate
approach as well as optimum utilization of barrier free environment, effective teacher education
and quality monitoring.
In Andaman & Nicobar Islands the SSA activities started in the year 2003.Now
lots of activities is being carried out in these Islands for the primary and
upper primary level students. The following activity under SSA is being carried out: |
1. Monthly Coordination meeting for all teachers of Primary/Upper Primary stage: |
The introduction of Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation in schools demands more effort
from teachers both at elementary and secondary level in terms of teaching-learning, evaluation,
observations etc. To understand the individualized requirement of each child, and to address them
appropriately requires in depth understanding and experience a one day cluster level meeting on every
fourth Saturday is being organized on a monthly basis for all elementary level teachers
(teachers teaching classes I to VIII at the respective Cluster Resource Centers. However, CRC
Coordinators may, at their discretion amend the format and may include/exclude items as deemed fit
for the meeting or as per their requirement. The duration of the programme shall not be less than 7
hours.

2. One Day Life Skill Training: |
To know civic sense and moral values in students one day life skill training is
being organized at schools under different CRCs for all the students of Class
VIII.

3. Hands-on-Training: |
To familiarize the students with the routine activities at places like Post Office,
Bank, Road etc. Locally available personnel from such establishments are engaged for
imparting knowledge on the rudiments of activities like filling up of forms/challans/slips
and importance of road safety to the school children.

4. Assessment Camps for CWSN: |
To ascertain the specific disability of the Children with Special Needs. Zonal level
health assessment camps held for the individual requirements of such children. They are
being provided with learning materials besides the assistive aids and appliances.

5. In-Service Training to all Elementary School Teachers:
|
To enhance the academic capacity of the elementary school teachers with respect to
the CCE pattern as well as implementation of Universalisation of Elementary Education
with special reference to RTE act, 2009,a 10 ten days teachers training programmes for
Primary and upper primary teachers is being organized at BRCs. The Master Trainers who
were trained by resource persons of high profile impart in-service training across the
length and breadth of the islands, in order to make the activities effective.

6. Exposure Visit and Local Tours: |
For exposure of rural, urban and ST children exposure visits to Chennai Bengaloru and
Mysore are being organized to know much more about mainland. Local tours are also
organized for the students of schools to the places of historical/scientific/tourist
interest in and around Port Blair or within the respective districts as per the availability
of funds with the BRC/CRC. This facility shall also be extended to the Urban Deprived
Children living in the urban localities that are deprived of such exposures.

7. District Level Exhibitions: (under RMSA) |
It has been proposed to organize District Level Exhibitions to encourage students
to develop scientific temper, skill in art/craft and other abilities. The Concerned
zonal Officers shall coordinate this activity. Best displays/models shall be nominated
for the State Level Exhibition to be held at Port Blair.

8. Book Fair: (Under RMSA) |
In conjunction with the National Book week in the month of November, District level
Book Fair will be organized involving all school libraries.

9. 5-day Residential Camp at the district level: |
In order to alleviate the gender disparity, and to encourage girls for schooling and
related activities, a 5-day residential camp for girls are organized at the district level.

10. Health Camp for girls: |
The Block Resource Coordinators shall ensure convergence with the zonal health centers for
organizing rounds of health check-ups at school level for girls to cope up with the
anxieties/complexities of physiological changes of adolescence. Emphasis is laid on providing
required health related information to the children.

11. 5-day Shikshika Sammalen: |
5- day Shikshika Sammelan is being organized for female teachers at District level in order to reinforce the objective of gender equity.

12. Civil Work: |
SSA has been entrusting civil works with various implementing agencies like APWD/Zilla Parishad. SSA is boosting the department for
ensuring the availability of infrastructure requirements.

13. Community Training: |
Community training for School Management Committee members is being trained to develop the ownership
mentality of the school and monitoring the implementation of SSA activities. The local community and
the members of the SMC will be trained on various aspects of the implementation SSA in this UT. It
shall be the responsibility of Heads of Schools as well as the Block and Cluster Coordinators to
mobilize the community to ensure universalization of Elementary Education in this UT which is the
Core objective of the UT Mission Authority.
